Searching the company register: free and with an extract

You can find a company in the Austrian company register free of charge via the JustizOnline search, by name or register number, with a free partial extract of basic data. The full extract costs a fee. Heinzle Immobilien GmbH in Altach asks for it for the registered office, €99 a month excl. VAT, because it only rents to registered companies.

Anyone checking a business starts with the company register. Here is where to search it free of charge, what an extract is and why we ask for one.

What is the company register?

  • A public register of businesses, kept by the regional courts. For Vorarlberg that is the Landesgericht Feldkirch
  • Entries include GmbH, AG, OG and KG. Sole traders only above a certain turnover
  • Every company has a register number of up to six digits and a check letter, for example FN 123456a

  • On JustizOnline you search by company name, register number, place or court
  • The company information and a partial extract with basic data are free there
  • For sole traders not in the company register there is the trade register GISA. Searching it is free too

You can check a business partner's VAT number for free with our VAT number check.

What is a company register extract?

  • The extract shows the business's currently registered data. On request it is also available with deleted, historical data
  • Online, the current extract costs €4.89 at present. To buy it you log in to JustizOnline with ID Austria
  • Clearing agencies offer it too and may charge a surcharge
  • You get a certified extract from the regional court or a notary

Why we ask for a company register extract

  • As a provider of business addresses, Austrian trade law requires us to check who uses the address
  • For the registered office we need the register number and a current extract. We only rent it to businesses already in the company register
  • For the business address, sole traders need only their GISA extract with the GISA number
  • Whether the address is enough in your case is best clarified beforehand with your tax adviser or the WKO founder service. That applies to any address, not only ours.
