What is an RSa letter?

  • A blue letter with a return receipt. Only courts and authorities may send it
  • It is delivered into your own hands: only to you or to a person with a postal power of attorney
  • If it is marked „Nicht an Postbevollmächtigte“, only you receive it in person

What is an RSb letter?

  • A white letter with a return receipt, also from a court or an authority
  • A substitute recipient may also accept it, such as someone in your household, your employee or your employer
  • You only see what it says when you open it. Delivery is proven by the return receipt

Yellow slip: what happens when nobody is there?

  • The post office deposits the letter at the post office branch and leaves a notice. It says where the letter is and until when
  • To collect it, bring the notice and an official photo ID
  • The letter is kept for at least two weeks
  • Important: a deposited letter usually counts as delivered from the first day of the pickup period. Deadlines therefore run even if you have not collected it yet

If someone else is to collect the letter for you, they need a postal power of attorney.
