From trade registration to the company register: which address, when
- Trade registration usually comes first: you register your trade at the district authority or online via the business service portal, and you name a location where the authority can reach you
- For a sole proprietorship, any address where post reliably arrives is generally enough, including your own home address. Many founders rent a business address instead, so their private address does not end up in the public trade register
- If you are founding a GmbH, the company register adds a step: the seat is usually entered through the notary as part of formation, at a specific address where the company can genuinely be reached, not a post box, not just a municipality
- That entry needs the owner's declaration of consent. We issue it as soon as the address is rented
- In practice that usually means: secure the address first, then take it to trade registration and, for a GmbH, on to the notary and the company register. The same address carries through all three steps

Can I use a rented address as my registered office?
In principle yes, provided the address can receive service of process and you are genuinely reachable there. A plain post box is not enough. How strictly the authority reads this in a given case is worth clarifying with your tax adviser first.
What is a ladungsfähige Adresse?
An address where official and court post can be delivered and actually accepted. What counts is not the nameplate on the door but that the post arrives and someone takes it in. A post box does not meet that. In Altach it is a building with a reception: your post is taken in by people, and you either collect it or we scan it. How strictly the relevant authority reads that in your case is best clarified in advance with your tax adviser.
Is a letterbox enough for a registered office?
There is a distinction between a bare letterbox and a serviced address with real mail handling, and the publicly available sources on it do not agree. What gets viewed critically is the letterbox with nobody behind it. Altach is the other end of that: a building with a reception, a waiting area and tenants who genuinely work there. What is entered is a specific address at which the company can be reached, not merely a municipality, and not a post box. Service of documents must arrive there and be accepted. Notaries and the register therefore usually ask for the owner's written consent that the company may have its seat at that address. We issue that declaration for Altach. How do I register my trade at a rented address?
Usually in three steps: you rent the address and receive written confirmation that you may use the location. With that you register the trade at the district authority or online via the business service portal. Then you enter the same address everywhere the authority needs to be able to reach you. Does a GmbH need its own office?
